Description
Here are some tips for keeping your roof in "tip top" shape. Always use extreme caution when climbing up to or walking on your roof. Better yet, have the roofing professionals from McKinnis Roofing inspect your roof.
  • Perform a thorough inspection every Spring and Fall. Look for ice and snow damage in the Spring, such as loose shingles, punctures, rotting soffit or leaking gutters. In the Fall, look for wind damage, loose shingles and flashing that may need to be resealed. Loose shingles can be sealed with roof cement, damaged shingles should be replaced.
  • Keep the roof clean. Fallen leaves, branches or other debris will collect in your valleys or behind other penetrations. The debris will hold water and cause deterioration to your roof. These objects should be cleaned off of your roof on a regular basis. It is also a good idea to trim overhanging tree branches.
  • Keep your gutters clean and secure. Gutters that are clogged with debris can fill with water and overflow, causing damage to your gutters and foundation. Make sure that they are clean and securely fastened to the house. Deteriorating or leaking gutters should be repaired or replaced.
  • Make sure your roof is properly ventilated. Adequate ventilation will balance out the attic and roof temperature, which will help to avoid ice damming and other damage to your roof components. Frost, ice, or mold in the attic; water stains on the drywall; sagging between the rafters; shingle blistering; or excessive ice damming on the eaves or the roof can all be signs of improper roof ventilation or attic insulation. Call a professional if you notice any of these things.
